This year, Christmas Day falls on a Saturday while Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, which ultimately affects the timing of payments to those eligible for benefits.
As Christmas Day is a public holiday and Boxing Day is a public holiday, this means that the next two working days, Monday December 27 and Tuesday December 28, will be treated as “replacement” holidays.
This means that the universal credit, tax credits and PIP benefits will not be paid on these days.
Here’s everything you need to know about how benefit payments will be affected this holiday season.
When will I receive my benefits during the Christmas holidays?
Benefit payment dates vary from person to person, but if your payment date coincides with the “replacement” holidays of Monday December 27 or Tuesday December 28, you will receive your payment the previous business day.
Therefore, you can expect your benefit payment to arrive in your account on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24, as it is the last normal business day before Christmas Day.
Those who expect a payment on Wednesday, September 29, can also expect their benefit payment to land in their account on Christmas Eve.
You don’t have to do anything to make sure the payment arrives in your account on Christmas Eve – it will automatically arrive in your account that day.
If your payment day is not on any of the Christmas holidays this year, you can expect payment on the same day as usual.
Since New Years Day – usually a public holiday – falls on a Saturday this year, this means that another “replacement” holiday will be given on Monday, December 3.
Those who expect payment on that day will therefore automatically receive their payment on the previous business day, i.e. Friday, December 31.
The installments scheduled for January 2 and 3 will also be paid on Friday December 31.

Will the amount be different from normal?
Although the dates differ slightly due to Christmas holidays, the amount paid into your account will not differ from normal.
It will only be if changes have been made to the amount to which you are entitled that the amount of your payment may change.
