Government departments HM Revenue and Customs and Department for Work and Pensions generally pay benefits into bank accounts on a regular date.

But in some cases, if your payment date falls on a weekend or a public holiday, you will usually get paid the previous working day, although it may be different for people claiming tax credits or family allowances.

And while that may seem like a long way off, knowing exactly how much and when you will have it is essential, especially during the holiday season when government offices and banks may be closed. Daily registration reports.

The DWP is responsible for administering a number of benefits, including Universal Credit, Inherited Benefits, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and State Pension.

They also ensure that providers receive their payment on time, advising them of any potential changes to their regular schedule.

Public holidays during the holiday season can affect when many claimants receive their regular payment, however, although the DWP has yet to confirm whether payment dates will be revised over Christmas and New Years, there is most likely they will be on a Saturday and Sunday this year.

This means that Monday December 27 and Tuesday December 28 will be classified as public holidays, as well as Monday January 3 and Tuesday January 4 (Scotland only) will also be classified as public holidays.

HMRC has already updated its relevant pages on GOV.UK to Tax credits and Family allowances Christmas and New Year payments.

Christmas and New Year tax credit payment dates

  • Payment due Monday, December 27: Payment will be made on Friday, December 24
  • Payment due Tuesday, December 28: Payment will be made on Friday, December 24
  • Payment due Monday January 3: Payment will be made on Friday December 31
  • Payment due Tuesday January 4: Payment will be made on Friday December 31st (Scotland only)

Dates of payment of family allowances at Christmas and New Year

  • Payment due Monday, December 27: Payment will be made on Friday, December 24
  • Payment due Tuesday, December 28: Payment will be made on Friday, December 24
  • Payment due Monday January 3: Payment will be made on Friday December 31

DWP payment dates possible over Christmas and New Years

The DWP has yet to confirm holiday payment dates, but it is expected to follow revised guidelines from HMRC.
