Agendas for the Amarillo City Council meetings for September 6 and 8 have been posted on the city’s website. According to the documents, the meetings will focus only on the city’s budget and tax rate.
The relatively short agenda posted for the Sept. 6 meeting includes an invocation and public address, followed by a public hearing on the city budget. It will then be followed by a first reading of the ordinances on the budget and tax rates.
The equally short agenda posted for the September 8 meeting also includes an invocation and a public address, these then being followed by a public hearing on the tax rate. According to the diaries, “the tax rate will actually be raised by 23.66%”. Then will follow the second and final readings of the ordinances adopting the budget and the tax rate. Finally, a procedural vote ratifying the budget and the tax rate.
The public hearings for the budget and the tax rate had previously been set for August 16 and 19 by the council during its August 2 meeting. However, because the proposed rate was just below the legal threshold requiring an election (which should have been called by August 22), the city canceled those hearings and postponed them.
